Snapshots: A Picture Is Worth

a Thousand Words

As demonstrated in this chapter, ENT fails to fully adapt to contemporary American culture at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Rather, it portrays an image in the Star Trek timeline, pre-TOS. Do the snapshots support this image? We collected snapshots of ENT from 14 episodes, resulting in 799 snapshots; the results are presented here.[29]

Minority Representation

ENT represents minorities dismally. Whites represent 84 percent of snapshots, with 9 and 7 percent Blacks and Asians, respectively. As to rank within Starfleet, all admirals and captains are White, and the snapshots only captured 1 percent of lieutenants as Black and 7 percent as Asian. Character occupations fare no better. Leaders and chiefs with authority over others are 99 percent White. Minorities are seldom visible to the viewer. ENT misses an opportunity to adapt to the delightful diversity in the contemporary American culture of the times and instead maps onto TOS.
